Three Weeks in St. Maarten

by Alli

I’m blessed to be spending three weeks in St. Maarten. Of all the Caribbean islands I’ve been to, I think I’ve found my favorite one.

The views from our balcony are phenomenal. The weather is perfect. The breezy trade winds, luxurious.

The food is delicious and the people are friendly. What more could we want? I may never go back home . . . I could work as a waitress. A cook?

Our Annual Anniversary Trip

The hubby and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary last October. I hesitate to say celebrated because October is one of our busiest months of the year.

We decided to postpone our 30th wedding anniversary until, well, now. The longest we’ve ever been away from home is two weeks, so this is a first for us.

Working Vacation In St. Maarten

I do have to add, however, that this is a little bit of a working vacation for the hubs, as he is using some of this time to work on a book he is writing.

And, because I never consider writing to be work, I’m continuing to blog, simply because I love it.

One Island – Two Nations – Three Weeks In St. Maarten

In case you didn’t know, the smallest island in the world ever to have been partitioned between two different nations, St. Martin/St. Maarten has been shared by the French and the Dutch in a spirit of neighborly cooperation and mutual friendship for almost 350 years.

We are staying on the Dutch side, but will definitely be visiting the French side, as well.

For the next three weeks, I will be sharing some normal posts (finished back home) and throwing in some reviews of restaurants, etc.  Yep, I’m a travel blogger, for the next few weeks.  ðŸ™‚

The first thing I have to make myself do is to slow down. Ever heard of island time?  It’s real and it’s slow. It’s real slow. No one ever gets in a hurry on the islands. And that’s one of the reasons we are here.

Relax, You’re On Island Time

There is absolutely no reason to get upset with a waiter when it takes 30 minutes to bring your drink order.  es, even water. That’s just how it is.

Helpful Hint: Most restaurants add a 15% gratuity to the bill, so pay attention, relax, enjoy! And throw in a little extra tip for those hardworking waiters!

The night views are amazing, too!

I love fried plantains and all the food is excellent in St. Maarten.

In the days to come, I will be adding restaurant reviews and more pics!  Until then, dag (good day in Dutch) and au revoir (in French). Relax, everyone speaks English here in St. Maarten and accepts the American dollar!

Girl, soak it up! I am so jealous – THREE WEEKS! I was blessed to live in Hawaii for 3 months (thanks to a US Navy boyfriend) and it was most definitely paradise. And island time really does exist, but I loved it!
Great photos – keep ’em coming! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! 🙂

Hi Alli! Your post brought back some wonderful memories for me. The pictures are beautiful! Which resort did you stay at?

My husband and I first met in St. Marteen over 20 years ago while we were on spring break. I from IU and my husband from U of M. We met at Mullet Bay which used to be one of the prime spots on the Island until a hurricane destroyed it in ’95. It was not rebuilt and my parents lost their vacation home. Needless to say, we made some great memories. Our meeting has also been the topic of some hilarious, if not down right ridiculous, conversations when others ask how we met. In other words, my daughter is never going on spring break. Haha!

Glad you enjoyed your vacation and how wonderful that you were able to spend three weeks there on such a magical island. Happy anniversary!! 🙂
