Disclosure: I was provided with complimentary movie passes to watch a Gifted Movie Screening in exchange for promoting this upcoming release. However, all views shared are mine alone. #GiftedMovie
It’s always fun to finally see a movie you’ve been looking forward to. The moment I saw the trailer for Gifted, I knew this was a must-see for me. Fortunately, my daughter, son-in-law, husband and I watched The Gifted Movie Screening early so I could share my thoughts.
The star-studded cast of characters for the Gifted Movie includes Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace, Lindsay Duncan, Jenny Slate and Octavia Spencer.
Gifted – The Story
Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) – in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan). Her plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary.
Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie. Bonnie’s concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.

Gifted Review
The Pros of Gifted Movie
I invited my husband, daughter, and son-in-law to accompany me to the screening of Gifted. During the movie, I watched their expressions, etc. and after the movie was over, I asked them their opinions. We all gave the movie the exact same number of stars (keep reading).
The movie started off with warm and fuzzy moments that make you smile. For me, McKenna Grace (Mary) clearly stole the show. Her acting ability is way beyond her years. And who doesn’t love Octavia Spencer? She’s always a favorite with me.
The entire cast of the Gifted Movie impressed me, especially Lindsay Duncan (Mary’s grandmother). She did a great job convincing me of her intentions to exploit her gifted granddaughter.
The Cons of Gifted Movie
The one part I didn’t like was the swear words that burst forth from Mary a few times. Sure, I understand that she’s being raised by her single uncle, but I’m not a fan of kids or adults using curse words, but that’s just me. The uncle drops the “F” bomb once.
Remember that Gifted is rated PG13 for a reason. I don’t think young children will get this movie at all. Yes, it’s centered around a 2nd-grade girl, yet it deals with serious issues such as suicide and a child custody battle.
Final Words
All in all, Gifted is a good movie and it caused me to question how I would handle having a child prodigy. Mary’s grasp of higher mathematical equations was far beyond my abilities.
The message that there’s much more to life than being smart is heard loud and clear and one that I totally agree with. I admire the courage of Frank (Chris Evans) as he fights to give Mary a normal life.
I laughed, I cried and I cheered for Mary. Be sure and have a few tissues tucked in your pocket. I noticed my daughter sniffling a few times as well. Gifted did not disappoint and I give it 3-1/2 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE the previews for this movie!! I need to go see it! Plus I went to college with McKenna Grace’s Mom so I kind of feel like I need to see it 😉
I am super excited for this movie. I keep seeing previews and it looks awesome.
Luck you for getting to see this movie. I have seen the previews and both my husband and I said it looked like a great movie to go and see.
This movie is also on my list of must see movies because of Chris Evans but also the relationship and life it tries to give his niece
This movie looks SO good. I’m hoping to see it with my girls. I’m also a huge Octavia Spencer fan so this one is definitely on my list!
This movie looks so absolutely good. I keep seeing the previews and I can’t wait to see it.
I finally saw a trailer for Gifted on TV last week and it looked so good! I love all the actors who are in it so I’ll definitely have to check it out when it comes out.
I’m waiting for this movie to be shown in our local theater. I have no doubt this will be a good one. Films that deal with family and relationships are my favorites.
As I was reading through your post, one of the lines really struck me – what if I was a mom of a child prodigy? Honestly, I don’t know how I would handle it. I mean, I would be thankful to God for the blessing, but I would also be concerned about my child, and would probably do everything to protect him/her from being exploited. I will watch Gifted. So looking forward to it.
Loving the look of this movies, can’t wait to watch them
Thanks for the detailed review. I have heard really great things about Gifted.
Gifted is definitely on my Spring movie list. I am glad they put an emphasis on the child as a whole. Even though she is amazingly smart, she is still a child.
This sounds like a movie I would like to watch! Oh I can’t wait to see this.
Gifted looks like a great story of human relationships. Will definitely enjoy the movie when it hits a theatre near us.
