My one word for 2014 – Forget New Year’s Resolutions! They don’t usually last, do they? I’m going with One Word for the new year.
Have you heard about One Word Three-Sixty-Five? I was introduced to One Word by reading a post by another blogger and I was intrigued.
The post leads me to a website that explains the precept of One Word. It’s encouraging us to pick one word to focus on for the entire year. You can find more information at One Word 365.
As I read about One Word, my mind immediately went into overdrive trying to find my one word for the year. The One Word website explains it like this:
What do you want to focus on in the new year?
“It can be something tangible or intangible. It can be a thought, a feeling, an action, or a character trait. Your word will be a reminder, a nudge. Something you can reflect on, that will challenge you, that will inspire you”.
After reading the paragraph above, I got all excited about how easy it would be to remember one word, every day, all year long.
After mere moments of contemplating, I choose the word love.
I would like every action, every thought, every word, everything I do to be motivated by love.
No, I’m not a mean person, but I want to expand my love walk. If I keep the word love in my thoughts daily, I do believe I will be much more conscious of allowing love to guide me in every decision I make.
My one word, love, will shadow me for the entire year. I may feel like that word is dogging me at times!
I may get sick of that word, but I hope that by keeping my one word, love, close to me, in my heart and my mind, I will be a little bit nicer, a little more forgiving, a little kinder, and a little gentler.
Love Does No Wrong
I need to meditate on this!
Romans 13:10 – Love does no wrong to one’s neighbor [it never hurts anybody]. Therefore love meets all the requirements and is the fulfillment of the Law.
I’m Excited About My One Word 2014
I’m so excited! Will you join me? Let’s do this together! It will be so much fun!
And I’ll check in with you from time to time throughout the year.
Your word can be anything you want it to be! It only took a few moments for my word to find me.
It may take you mere seconds or longer, much longer, to find your word or for your word to find you. That’s OK!
When I told my husband about me joining the One Word bandwagon, he decided to jump on, too. His word is Forward. That’s a great word for a pastor, isn’t it?
When you find your word or your word finds you, please leave a comment with your one word for the year! I would love to hear all the different words that you all come up with!
Happy New Year!

passion. Find it and live it.
Passion is an awesome word!
Discipline (for myself in all areas will take care of health, kids, attitude, walk with God, progress in my business etc!)
Great word!
Mine’s a number…180
That will work! Sounds like you are talking about doing a 180 in some area. Sounds good to me.
My word is Enjoy. I sometimes tend to not enjoy things because everything doesn’t go perfectly, or just as I had planned. I also find myself looking forward next week, next month, or next event instead of enjoying the present. I have 2 kids that are growing up so fast and I want to cherish this time. So now my word can help me to enjoy these moments I have now.
That’s a good one, Ashley. Maybe that should have been my word because I do the same thing – always looking forward to the next event, next special occasional. 🙂 Great word!
Great post, Alli! I, for one, am having a VERY hard time narrowing an entire year down to one word. I’ve got to pray about it a bit more, that’s for sure!
Personally, I look at it as finding that one word that I want to live by for the next year. You will find it! Or it will find you. 🙂
My one word is “obedience.” I have struggled this year with being obedient to Christ and what He expects of me daily. So if I keep that word ever present, I will remember to be obedient and pray, read His word and follow His word.
I am visiting from SITS girls and I love your blog!! I will be back more often.
Blessings!
What a beautiful and an important word! I knew I would hear a lot of really good words. So glad we connected via SITS!
This is great Alli! I would have to say my one word for this year is “Strength”. I have gotten waaaay out of shape after taking care of my ill father. I need to focus on my health and well-being in 2014. Happy New Year! ~Renee
All of the words I’m reading in the comments are so awesome and I my heart goes out to you and your dad. Taking care of your ill father is a great and very loving sacrifice. It takes a toll on everyone involved. Wishing you much strength for 2014!
This is a very interesting concept. I’m not sure I can narrow an entire year down to one word either. I like all the words the other’s have shared and your’s, ‘Love’. I tell my children that life is about love and forgiveness. I’m going to select ‘forgiveness’. Being a forgiving person is much easier said than done. Actually focusing on being more forgiving could be a nice disciplinary project for a year, love will fall right in there.
Forgiveness is a great word, Shirley! You are so right, life is about love and forgiveness.
My word is perseverance. It is based upon 1Corinthians 9:24-27. Continuing to run the race to the end goal no matter what. I have been sidetracked this past year and I need to keep persevering in what God wants for my life. Thanks for the great post!!
I keep getting amazed at all the great words you all are coming up with. Perseverance and running your race to the end is such a good goal for 2014. Thanks!
Hi Alli – wonderful name…my niece is an Ali 😉 Found your site through SITS, and I love it. This post is just what I needed…resolutions DO get broken, and I really wasn’t up for the pressure. The idea of having a one word mantra to keep in mind every day is perfect.
After some thought, and searching to make sure I was using a positive word, I chose ‘Bloom’ – now I’m off to whip up a cute little graphic like you have, going to set it as my laptop background.
What an awesome word, Tearei! It makes me think of the phrase, “Bloom Where You Are Planted.” Thanks for stopping by and participating!
Elaine says
My word is Love, without love I am nothing. Love never fails! Faith worketh by love.
We have the same word, Elaine! Great minds think alike. 🙂
My one word for 2013 was priorities… and I did well with it. I can’t decide for 2014! I am contemplating “art”. I have started thinking of myself more and more as an artist, and it has taken tremendous pressure off the creative process. You can’t rush an artist, after all. Haha. Plus you know how people are always saying things are an “art form”? I think a little work on the art of parenting and marriage is in order too – following my passion, rather than going “by the book”. Art is very individual, and it’s a passionate thing. I think applying that way of looking at a lot of my everyday endeavors could make everything in my life that I tend to take for granted a lot more special.
You are, indeed, an artist, Adrianne! Your jewelry is always so beautiful and you can tell a lot of time and effort goes into each piece.
My word is “determination.”
Great word, Cinzia! 🙂
