Pretty Petits Fours

by Alli

I’ve joined a lovely group of bloggers for Movie Monday Challenge. The movie we’re celebrating this month is The Princess Bride. I decided to create Pretty Petits Fours Worthy of The Princess Bride. Be sure and check out all the other Princess Bride links at the end of my post.

Petits Fours Worthy of a Princess

In case you haven’t seen the 1987 romantic comedy, the story begins with a grandfather reading a story to his sick grandson. Buttercup, a beautiful young girl who lives on a farm, loves to boss around the farmhand, Westley. He answers every order with “As you wish.” It was his way of saying, “I love you.”

After Buttercup realizes that she’s in love with Westley, he leaves the farm to seek his fortune. After Westley apparently dies at sea, Buttercup vows to never love again but accepts the marriage proposal of Prince Humperdinck.

I won’t tell you the rest of the story, but The Princess Bride is a classic tale of love and adventure. So, Pretty Petits Fours Worthy of The Princess Bride is an ode to Buttercup.

Let’s make some Pretty Petits Fours

Petits Fours - Worthy of a Princess

In a mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add alternating with the milk, beating well after each addition.

In a small bowl, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gently fold into batter.
Pour into the square baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pan. Cool completely on a wire rack. Cut a thin slice off each side of the cake and cut the cake into 1-1/4″ squares. Place 1/2″ apart on a rack in a jelly roll pan to catch drips.
Combine glaze ingredients, beating on low until combined and on high until smooth.
Pour over cake until well covered. Let dry completely.

These Petits Fours are adorable for a princess-themed party or for whenever you want to feel like a princess.

Did you know?

Traditional Petits Fours are usually made with marzipan. I don’t care for marzipan (candy paste made primarily from sugar and almonds) and I’m not one to follow rules. I think my way is delicious!

Also, when you’re talking about one small fancy cake, it’s Petit Four. The plural of Petit Four is Petits Fours. Petit Four is a french word. The English translation is Small Oven.

I made my Princess Petits Fours a little larger (about 2″ instead of 1-1/4″) than normal so that the pink chocolate crowns would fit on top. No matter how you cut them, they are delicious!

Have you ever seen The Princess Bride? One of my favorite quotes is when the grandson says to his grandfather, “Grandpa, maybe you could come over and read it again to me tomorrow.” His grandpa replies. “As you wish.”
