Crumb-Top Apple Pie

September and October is all about apples!  How do you like them apples?

I’ve had this recipe for over 30 years and it’s always my first choice when I want to make a pie.  It’s my hubby’s very favorite apple pie!

This recipe resides in an old index card notebook and is stained and well worn.  And every time I make this crumb top apple pie, it takes me back to those first few years of marriage.  I sometimes wonder if I like it so much because of all the good memories associated with this pie!

I love the fact that this pie is not complicated and doesn’t require a bottom crust.  The crumb topping is all this pie needs!

Crumb Top Apple Pie

Crumb-Top Apple Pie
  • ⅔ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. nutmeg
  • 8 large tart apples, peeled, thinly sliced (I use Granny Smith apples)
  • 2 Tablespoons water
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • Crumb Topping
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup butter, room temp.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  1. Preheat oven to 350. In a large bowl combine sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Add apples. Sprinkle on water and lemon juice. Toss until evenly coated. Spoon into pie pan. Dot with butter.
  2. Cream sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add flour and stir until smooth. Spoon onto apples. Bake 50-60 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream (but it's also good just as it is)!

What’s your favorite dessert that conjures up fond memories?  Do tell!
