DIY Buffalo Plaid Pumpkins Are Easy To Make

by Alli

Easy DIY Buffalo Plaid Pumpkins are so easy to make – even I can do it! I’m including links to products I use for this project. If you click the link and order the product, I may receive a small commission with no extra cost to you.

I was going to try my hand making DIY velvet pumpkins. I love all the velvet pumpkins I see floating around Pinterest.

So, the idea of velvet pumpkins quickly went away when I saw the price of velvet. I quickly changed my mind because who knows if I’ll like velvet pumpkins next fall.

I decided to go with a cheaper alternative and grab these buffalo plaid fat quarters from Amazon. They were much cheaper than velvet.

Buffalo Check Fabric for DIY Pumpkins

The buffalo check fabric I purchased from Amazon isn’t exactly dirt cheap, but I have plenty of fabric to use for other projects. And the Buffalo plaid colors are all pretty!

Helpful Hint: You can use plaid fabric from old flannel shirts for this project too. I couldn’t find any in my husband’s closet. You can also use solid fabric. Personalize this project and make it your own.

Here’s what I used to make these cute little pumpkins.

  • Roll of Toilet Paper
  • Fabric
  • Wooden Spoon (I use the wooden spoon to help poke the fabric into the center of the TP)
  • Ribbon
  • 4″ sticks from the yard
  • faux fall leaves (optional)

For me, the fall leaves are a must! You can buy them at the dollar store. I thought I’d need my glue gun but my faux leaves have long stems. Just stick them in the center, behind the stick (stem).

My fabric is 18×22 inches (fat quarter – 1/4 of a yard of fabric). My mama, an expert seamstress, would be so proud that her daughter knows what a fat quarter is.

Unwrap the toilet paper a few times to make it fluffier. Ten times works for me.

Unroll TP to make DIY Pumpkins

Wrap the toilet paper loosely around the roll, twisting and turning to make it look more like a pumpkin.

Roll TP back up loosely

Place a roll of toilet paper in the center of the wrong side of the fabric. Stuff one corner of the fabric into the center of the toilet paper roll.

Press Fabric into center of TP Roll

Use a wooden spoon to help poke it in. Then stuff the other corners, gathering the fabric as you go. You may have to readjust the fabric once you have the TP roll completely covered. I did!

Push fabric into the center of the toilet paper roll

Tie a ribbon around a stick and insert in the center. Add leaves.

Wasn’t that simple? And I think these pumpkins are so cute.

This little craft would be a cute fall craft for a Sunday School classroom.

I’m going to let the grandkids make their own pumpkins when we have our next slumber party.

Notes

I love buffalo check (plaid) but you can use solid-colored fabric if desired.
