Easy Dalgona Coffee AKA Whipped Coffee

by Alli

Dalgona Coffee has taken social media by storm. You’ve probably seen it on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. I don’t do TikTok (I don’t even know if I’m spelling it correctly). Anyhoo, Dalgona Coffee is going wild on social media.

I had to see what all the fuss is about. Of course, I have to bring you along for the ride.

What is Dalgona Coffee?

Dalgona Coffee is a whipped coffee featuring instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. You beat it all together with a hand mixer until thick and light brown in color. It takes several minutes to thicken. Then you add the mixture to a cup of iced milk. That’s it.

Oh, yeah, Dalgona Coffee is named after a South Korean candy.

Ingredients for Dalgona Coffee

  • Instant Coffee
  • Sugar OR Sugar Substitute
  • Hot Water
  • Ice
  • Milk (Any kind of milk but I use unsweetened Almond Milk)

How To Make Dalgona Coffee

I decided to ditch the sugar and replace it with Splenda. If you don’t like Splenda, you can use your favorite sugar substitute.

The first time I made Dalgona Coffee, I used one Tablespoon instant coffee (Folgers Instant Decaf – I’m no fun), one tablespoon Splenda, and one Tablespoon water. The recipe is a 1-1-1 ratio of the ingredients.

Dalgona Coffee Ingredients in a glass bowl

With a hand mixer (I had to dig that thing out because I always use my stand mixer), mix it until it becomes thick and light brown – about the color of light brown sugar.

I was going to time it to see how long I mixed it but I forgot to time it. You will need to beat on medium speed for several minutes. Once it’s thick and light brown, you’re there.

After I mixed everything together, I took a taste and it was way too strong for me. I am not a fan of super-strong coffee. So, I stirred in another tablespoon of Splenda. Ahhh – just right.

How To Serve Dalgona Coffee

After you whip up the coffee, you’ll need to add ice cubes to a glass. Add a cup of milk (I use almond milk but you can use your favorite milk) and spoon the whipped coffee on top.

I have to be completely honest. At this point, the brown plop sitting on top of the milk didn’t look very appetizing. I like to stir the whipped coffee into the milk, but you can leave it on top and let it meld with the milk as you sip.

This is the easiest recipe in the world. Some people whip the coffee with a whisk. But, I’m telling you, girlfriend, you’re gonna be whipping for a while. It’s easier to use a hand mixer.
