Trash to Treasure – A Simple Cart Redo

by Alli

Today I’m going to show you my trash to treasure cart redo!  I needed something to place our “Too Blessed to be Stressed” craft project on during our Shades of Pink spring brunch but I didn’t want a plain, boring table.  I wanted a rolling cart and I wanted it to be pink!

On a recent visit to Gainesville, Georgia, where my husband was the guest minister at a church for a Wednesday evening and the following Sunday services (and I taught a class on Sunday morning), we stayed in a wonderful farm house in the foothills of the north GA mountains.  The house is a get-away home owned by our very close friends, Robin and Wendy.

Wendy is the type of friend that no matter how long it’s been since we have talked or seen each other, we can just pick up right where we left off.

She is a pastor’s wife, too, and also a “for real” interior designer, degree and all.  And because I just play one on TV (just kidding), guess what our conversation always turns to?  You guessed it!  We are always bouncing ideas off of each other and we always leave each other pumped up and ready to tackle our next big project.  (If you are reading this Wendy, we really do need to write that book together).

So, during our visit, I told Wendy that I wanted to find an old, beat up cart that I could fix up and paint pink.  After she recovered from the initial shock of the painting it pink part, we made a date to visit all of the wonderful antique/junk/thrift/mission/boutique stores that she frequents and scores amazing deals.

Here’s a confession:  Prior to this visit, I had never, ever, ever stepped foot into a thrift/mission store in my life.  I’ve donated plenty but I had never shopped there.  Boy, I didn’t know what I was missing!  The Atlanta Mission Store was unbelievable!

Alas, we didn’t find the cart I was looking for.  But Wendy found additions to her Lenox china pattern that was almost a steal and I found a depression glass cake plate for barely nothing.  You know how I love cake plates!

The thing I liked about thrift shopping with Wendy is that the girl knows her stuff – big time!  She knows her antiques and she can tell a knock-off from an aisle away!  I felt so safe and secure!

Back to the cart:  I saw a couple at an antique store but they were way over-priced for my brunch budget.  Then Wendy casually mentioned that she had one on the front porch of the farmhouse that she had not had the time to do anything with.  And then, because she has the kindest heart in the entire free world, she gave it to me.  I did refuse it at first, but in the end, I snatched that thing up and had to take it completely apart to fit in the trunk of my car.

First of all, after scrubbing it, I had to sand the daylights out of it to remove the rust and years of yucky stuff build up.  Then I primed and painted it.  Originally, I was going to spray paint it.  That was before the monsoon hit for two weeks so I had to prime and paint it inside, with a roller.  I used paint left over from another project so this was really a totally free cart!  Here’s the before and after pics:

It looks fabulous. What a great job you did. And how wonderful that you were able to see the beauty under the worn.
