What in the world is a Picklewich?

A Picklewich is a sandwich that uses large dill pickle halves as the bread, offering a crisp, tangy alternative to traditional sandwiches.

This unique twist on a classic sandwich is popular among those seeking a low-carb or gluten-free option. Itโ€™s also favored by pickle lovers who appreciate the extra crunch and flavor.

You probably have everything you need in the fridge to make this sandwich.

Common fillings include:

  • Sliced meats (turkey, ham, roast beef)
  • Cheese (Swiss, American, provolone)
  • Lettuce, tomato, onion
  • Mustard, mayonnaise, or other spreads

Pickles offer a strong, briny flavor and a firm texture, contrasting sharply with the softness of sandwich bread. A Picklewich is naturally gluten-free and very low in carbs.

Here’s how to put it all together! (Complete Directions Down Below In The Printable Recipe Card)

Picklewich

A Picklewich replaces traditional bread with large, sliced pickles for its outer layers. This unique sandwich strikes a balance between the distinct tanginess of the pickles and the typical fillings found in classic deli sandwiches.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Large Pickle
  • 1 Tablespoon Real Mayo
  • 2 Slices Turkey Lunch Meat
  • 1 Large Slice Tomato
  • 1 Large Slice Red Onion
  • 1 Slice American Cheese
  • 1 Large Leaf Romaine Lettuce

Items Needed:

  • Toothpicks (I use 3 per pickle)
  • Paper Towels

Instructions

  1. Slice the pickle in half, long ways.
  2. Use a spoon to gently scoop out the middle seed portion of the pickle. Don’t scoop too deep as you want to leave some filling for support.
  3. Use a paper towel to dab the pickles to dry them a bit.
  4. Choose the pickle half that will be on the bottom. If it’s not sitting flat, flip it over so the outside of the pickle is facing up and use a knife to trim the bottom so it will sit flat.
  5. Spread the mayo on the inside of the pickle where you scooped out the seeds.
  6. Fold the lunch meat and place it in the hole, with a bit hanging over each side.
  7. Cut the tomato and onion slices in half and add those to the sandwich, starting with the tomato. It will start getting tall at this point, so be careful it doesn’t fall apart on you.
  8. Cut the cheese slice in half and add it to the sandwich before adding the lettuce.
  9. Have the toothpicks ready and add the top of the pickle, lining it up with the other pickle half. Slip a toothpick through the top of each end of the pickle pushing it all the way to the bottom of the sandwich, ending with a toothpick in the middle. This will keep it from falling apart.
  10. Cut in half and enjoy!

 Tips and Storage

  • I do not suggest storing this recipe once assembled. It’s best if eaten immediately.
  • You can use any sandwich toppings you prefer. You donโ€™t have to stick with the ones I chose.
  • Have patience when stacking the sandwich and keeping it together. It can be a little slick, so donโ€™t fret if you run into this issue; it happens to all of us. The toothpicks will be your saving grace.
  • It makes things ten times easier to trim the bottom of the pickle half that will be acting as the bottom, before you start, because itโ€™s not possible after youโ€™ve stacked it – ask me how I know.
